An unexpected leak in our shower drain and finding out our garage air was being sucked into our home because of the lack of A/C duct work in our intake area, led to us starting the bathroom renovation a few months early.  We decided to do the shower first then take on the vanity and toilet area later.  Luckily we have a second bathroom so any time a part of our bathroom wasn’t working, we just used the guest bath.  Much easier than a kitchen renovation.  🙂

The fiberglass tub and shower combo unit was ripped out the first weekend of demo.  We immediately fixed the A/C intake problem and moved on to the new shower.  After talking to my realtor about the value of having a standard 60″ tub vs. a large walk in shower, we decided to go with the shower.  Our guest bath does not have a tub and we won’t be adding one in there so it was important for us to know how not having a tub would effect our home value.

This was a BIG project. What we did.

  • Demo – removed old carpet, tore out old fiberglass tub/shower unit
  • New plumbing for added shower heads (Hired Out)
  • Added 2×4 studs for extra shower door support
  • Installed new *Shower Base
  • Installed backer board
  • Taped and filled seams
  • Applied Aquadefence
  • Tiled entire shower, pan to ceiling
  • Grout & Sealed
  • Installed new fixtures (Bath & Kitchen showroom in Moore Supply)
  • Shower door (Hired Shower Doors of Houston)

Now we have a lovely shower with 3 different shower heads that all run at the same time.  Worth every single penny and the loss of a tub that this tall girl couldn’t even fit in comfortably.

The vanity area was a little complicated.  We wanted to keep two sinks, or at least the feel of two sinks, since this is the master.  The awkward L-shape design and location of our vanity made that hard.  Code requires a minimum distance between sink drains and we didn’t have the space to put them side by side.  I wasn’t about to put another tiny sink on the small side of the vanity so I decided to go with one large, oversized sink with two faucets.  For some people this might not be enough.  I honestly don’t understand the we must have two sinks in the master for our marriage to survive attitude but to each their own.  For me it was more about resale value.  Having two sinks was a must to appeal to all buyers and I feel we achieved that with our one huge sink.  I love it.  I love that it is different, its a beautiful piece and it solved our space problem.  It really is one of the statement pieces of the room.

  • Demo – removed countertops, sinks, faucets, lighting, mirrors
  • Removed weird angle at the end of vanity
  • Added new vanity side
  • Installed flooring for entire bathroom and closets
  • Made two dummy drawers, functioning drawers
  • Painted vanity
  • Added new hardware
  • Installed new countertop (Hired out, Lowes)
  • Tiled backsplash
  • Installed new *sink
  • Installed new faucets
  • All old wall paper torn off
  • Vanity light electricity moved (Shilling Services, LLC)
  • All drywall holes patched up
  • New texture
  • Entire room painted
  • Installed vanity lights
  • Hung new mirror
  • Built new shelves
  • Installed new shelves

It seriously does not even feel like the same room.  I wasn’t 100% sure about some of my design choices but I am so happy with the end result.

The toilet area was fairly easy.  New floors, new toilet, new storage.

  • New paint & floors
  • New toilet
  • Built and installed shelves
  • Painted door

Our bathroom did not have a vent in the main or toilet area.  We live on the coast in Texas.  It can be really hot and humid here.  Getting ready without sweating to death while someone was showering or has showered in the last 30 minutes was impossible.  In the main area we installed a new ceiling light fixture and put in a vent.  We felt the toilet area should have one as well so we added a vent light combo in there.

It was lots of work to transform this bathroom.  We couldn’t be happier with the results and I can’t wait to show y’all.  Friday is the big reveal!  Please check back to see all the final pictures and details.
